One of my favourite cards in Tarot is the Death card. Not that I have some morbid fascination with death (perhaps this explains how I married a metal head). In truth I'm fascinated by life and love all its attributes entirely, the good and the bad. Seeing the Death card appear in a reading is cause for excitement as I know something important is in the works. It's the messenger telling you to prepare...to process...to purify and let-go.
The Egyptians had a deep understanding of this concept leaving many scholars to surmise that they were a culture obsessed with death. This makes no sense considering the monumental works of art and architecture produced over such a long stretch of time.
This knowledge of death has been forgotten. Often we become seduced into thinking that death is bad or evil. Our ego takes to hold trying to grasp at everything we have, from a memento given to us in school - to a pair of jeans sitting in the closet - to an old picture of you and a past love. We fear losing connection and of completely letting-go, in return we end-up filling our lives with things that no longer serve us. This fills up space physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Unfortunately we see death as traumatic and habitually avoid it at all costs. We do not know nor are we taught how to allow things to die.
There are processes involved in letting death happen. Often death requires a sacrifice. This is the idea and thought behind the ancient practice of regicide (the act of killing a king) to bring healing and blessing to the people and the land. Obviously it is not practiced today but it's important to take a moment and consider the effects of such an act. The willingness to die, the preparation required, the moment of sacrifice and letting go, then there's the adjustment phase and finally the joyous arrival of a new king or in the case of Christianity the resurrection of a king returning in full glory. We only need to take a small fraction of this and apply it to our lives to see astounding results
Recognize and Be Willing To Let Things Die
I recognize there is a period of death
and rebirth taking place
I am willing to accept and partake in the process
Begin the Preparation to Let Go
I gather all that I was and who I think myself to be
Make Your Personal Sacrifice
I release and put to rest the past
and everything I have created
I let it go
Take the Time to Mourn
I remember and celebrate what was
I give thanks for what has taken place
Await the Arrival
I have honoured the rite and passage of death
I await the newness and rebirth of life
The New Beginning
I give glory to the process of life and move forward with gratitude
