THE TAROT

Tarot is wonderful for guiding you through life's lessons. It'll indicate when to prepare for change and when it's time to celebrate or time to go. It warns you when you're travelling down the wrong path and teaches us what we need for personal growth. On occasion, the cards show hardships to come that cannot be diverted; in this case, you can now prepare and be ready for the coming storm. There is a beautiful flow to Tarot, sending us the messages we need to know.

MY READING PROCESS

In advance of your reading, I take the time to clear the room and set the cards for you. When you arrive, we'll take a moment to focus inward to space of the heart with a simple affirmation. For card selection, I use a technique where I shuffle and select the cards on your behalf. There are a few reasons for this; firstly, it is common to pull cards for ourselves that we may wish and (or) hope to receive instead of selecting the cards we need. Secondly, this deck is attuned to my energy and understandings of reading it. When removing the card selection process from the inquirer, a more accurate and objective reading is attainable, allowing the clearest energy to come through. Lastly, because time (and energy) are mutable, information from readings expands to the next three to four months.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TAROT

Tarot finds its beginnings in the parlour games of the 1400s. Mysteriously it leaped into a full divination practice by the 1750s, with unfounded rumours of connections to the ancient Egyptians and The Book Of Thoth or the Emerald Tablets. It is around this time when some of the first permutations of the images we see today began to appear, often corresponding to hermetic, alchemical, and Jewish mysticism, including occult (or secret) societies. A few hundred years later, in 1909, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck made its debut, transforming Tarot into what we know today.​ 

Thanks to A. E. Waite, an adept student of esoteric wisdom and occult practices, we have one of the most tried and true decks of all time. He commissioned and directed artist, Pamela Colman Smith, to draw and paint the Tarot's 78 cards, notable in many of today's variations. Their deck was one of the first to have detailed illustrations of the Minor Arcana or Pip Cards. Through correspondence, Waite brought together the images and elements of the Tarot from several decks before him, adding deep esoteric symbology and knowledge of the pathways of the Kabbalah. Subsequently, many of today's decks may not have existed if it wasn't for their contribution. Others have followed the path laid by A. E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith, inspiring the hundreds of different decks that are now available​!

​ALCHEMIST, SPIRIT HEALER AND TEACHER

Ria-Mae Long is a life student of eastern and western mysticism, philosophy, esoteric thought and ancient cultures. For over a decade, she has studied and worked with-in the mystery traditions, after experiencing a spiritual awakening in 2007. Since 2015, she's been teaching courses on esoteric sciences, meditation, alchemy, astrology and occult practices, developing serval programs and working with hundreds of clients offering spiritual guidance and assistance in healing. ​ 

In 2019 she received the honour of becoming a Pipe Holder through Wade Maude of Hollow Bone Healing Lodge and sits on the Board of Directors for the​ organization in Calgary. She is also the founder and President of the House of Mem Centre for Spiritual Development in Banff, Canada, a society of spiritual practitioners in the Bow Valley adhering to the teachings of the Moon, the Sun, and The Four Directions.
